DONALD TRUMP: 7 THINGS THE MEDIA DID NOT TELL US

JANUARY 2017 - INcontext Ministries

Trump-Perspective

On 20 January 2017, Mr Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States of America.

At the brink of a new leadership era, it is important to consider some factors that the media omitted from their reporting. These factors do not make Mr Trump a better person or negate his real flaws, but contribute to the bigger picture that has, in many ways, been manipulated to shape perspectives along certain lines.

10 KNOWN UNKNOWNS THAT WILL SHAPE 2017

JANUARY 2017 - INcontext Ministries

2017-knownunknowns2017 is likely to be characterised by ‘known unknowns’. We know that the movement of millions of migrants will continue, but we do not know to what extent they will continue to be welcomed by host countries. We know that there will be key elections in Europe, but we cannot know their outcomes. We know that the US will welcome a new president on 20 January, but not how he will wield his political power. We know that wars in the Middle East will continue, but not how they will play out. We know there will be terrorist attacks, but not where and when.

We also know, however, that God is in control. In this article, we take a look at 10 'known unknowns', in a world where God is still sovereign.

donald trumpOn 9 November 2016, the world stood amazed as the leading democracy elected Donald Trump, a ‘political outsider’, as the new Commander-in-Chief of the United States. SURPRISING INSIGHTS INTO GERMANY'S REFUGEES

AUGUST 2016 - INcontext Ministries

00REFIn July, an INcontext team travelled to Germany to meet with key leaders in an attempt to unravel the challenges, opportunities and approaches concerning the hundreds of thousands of refugees crossing European borders.  The purpose of the research was not to determine opinions among the German public as a whole, but to assess how independent leaders view the influx of the refugees and how they approach involvement.  The research and interviews presented some surprising insights.

PATRIOTISM: THE QUESTION OF OUR TIME

JULY 2016 - INcontext Ministries

01NAT2Donald Trump, Brexit, Marine Le Pen, Geert Wilders, PEGIDA and a host of campaigners in Europe all have in common a deep sense of patriotism and a strong nationalistic devotion to their country.

If the more than 65 million displaced people in the world is “the story of our time” then this is probably “the question of our time”: Where does patriotism fit into Christianity? Can I celebrate my national and cultural identity and still pursue Kingdom principles?

These are important questions, and relate to issues of electoral responsibility, considerations of faith, national preferences, civic accountability, cross-cultural hospitality and ultimately our Christian witness.

THREE MODELS OF HOPE FOR A GENERATION OF DEATH

JUNE 2016 - INcontext Ministries

001REF33For the Church, the story of our present time is the 65.3 million displaced people around the globe who are seeking hope and salvation.

The Bible is full of lessons, warnings and guidelines regarding refugees. Many of the men and women featured in Scripture were either refugees, came from refugee families, or lived ‘outside their cultures’.

In this article we look at three models that provide a ‘Biblical mandate’ regarding our response to this great movement of people in need: a man, a movement and a Messiah.

In some ways, their stories reflect something of the stories of today’s refugees, and may help us to understand what is required of us.

'SYMBIOTIC' FACTORS IN THE ORLANDO ATTACK

JUNE 2016 - INcontext Ministries

Perspective-Orlando

This attack on the Orlando nightclub should not be viewed as an isolated incident involving a “self-radicalised lone wolf” acting on the spur of the moment.  Viewing this tragedy simply as an “Islamic attack on Western democracy” will blur and obscure the contributions of different role-players that led to the actual event. In the bigger picture, there is a kind of “symbiosis” – an “interdependent relationship” between various role-players and factors from different, opposing sides, all of which played some role in the lead-up to the shooting. All should be recognised and addressed: the ‘symbiosis’ of opposing values, worldviews and hardliners.

EUROPEAN JIHADISTS: FOUR REASONS, ONE SOLUTION

APRIL 2016 - INcontext Ministries

00-Perspectives-EuropeanJihadists

Fear has a very subtle way of blurring reality. The fear of Islamic State (IS) fighters entering Europe, disguised as refugees, has blurred the real issue of European nationals travelling to Iraq and Syria to be trained as IS fighters.  Probably one of the most critical questions of our generation is not “How many refugees are IS fighters?”, but rather Why do European youth join terror organisations like IS”?

In this article, we take a look at four of the key issues contributing to the 'radicalisation' of young European Muslims, as well as the only solution to prevent the same happening with the current refugees entering Europe.

SYRIAN REFUGEES - BLESSING OR CURSE?

APRIL 2016 - INcontext Ministries

001REF33

Fears of radical Islam infiltrating society are legitimate and proven.  However, this should not be communities’ prime consideration at this time. Rather, they should consider what the typical profile of a refugee is, and, given the estimated number of militants entering Europe, whether the threat of one militant outweighs the opportunity of reaching out to those with legitimate needs.

In an analysis conducted by UNHCR border protection teams in various locations in Greece, interviews were conducted with Syrian refugees who arrived in the country between April and September 2015.  Although the UNHCR survey is not representative of the whole Syrian refugee population, it does provide a good overall picture of what an average refugee could look like upon entering Europe.

During Easter we celebrate a crucified as well as a risen Saviour who, without changing His divine nature, caused a sequence of events that influences nations and people until today.  Through Easter, similar to a cat-cracker, God destined a catalytic event that separates light and darkness and speeds up the process for people to be saved.

Explore the comparison between a thermocatalytic cracking unit (CAT-CRACKER) and how the cross of Jesus catalytically set a sequence of events in motion so that the world might be saved through Him.

01new-year

“Don’t believe everything you think.”

This New Year’s resolution is more about having ‘new eyes’ than it is about seeking ‘new solutions’. For the global Church, answers to the many challenges of 2016 will not be found in the battle but in the approach.  Renewed IS attacks, a growth in radical Islam, more refugees entering Europe, looming economic collapses, a breakdown in international relationshipsearthquakes or new epidemics will either be seen as challenges or opportunities. The solution will be in the eye of the beholder.

I AM IRAQI, I AM CHRISTIAN

JUNE 2015 - SAT7

01Nazarene3The Islamic State, formerly known as ISIS, had marked homes and businesses owned by Christians with a red, painted ن (pronounced “noon”), the 14th letter of the Arabic alphabet and the equivalent to the Roman letter N. The ن stands for Nasara or Nazarenes, a derogative Arabic word for Christians.

The markings can be seen on the picture on the left.

SAT7 (See sat7uk.org for more information) has produced two video clips to generate prayer in support for believers in the Middle East. The videos: Iraq: Faith in the crucible and For those who remain - a prayer for the Middle East are hereby combined into a short clip that reflects how, what the jihadists intended for evil, the Body of Christ has reclaimed for good.

We encourage viewers to support the wonderful work of SAT7

THE REDEMPTIVE PURPOSE OF PERSECUTION.

11persecution1NOVEMBER 2014 - INcontext Ministries

It is said that Christians in the 21st century are more persecuted than during the time of Christ. Modern –day news reports of Christian persecution, especially over the past twelve months, seem more like pages ripped from the Book of Acts than the real time occurrences

However, when we lose sight of the Redemptive purposes of Suffering it leaves a believer with a sense of despair and hopelessness.  Redemptive suffering is when someone goes through pain and suffering with a divine purpose for others; when the road of suffering turns into the highway of redemption.

This article looks at the Reality, the Road and the Redemption of the Persecuted Church.

023-Perspectives-NameDebateOCTOBER 2014 - INcontext Ministries

In recent weeks, the French government has started to referring to the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria as 'Daesh', and US President Barack Obama issued an emphatic statement that IS "is not Islamic".

 VIDEO: "WEAR THE CROWN"

SEPTEMBER 2014 - Bill Drake

"For the mourning, for the grieving
For the sacrifice of love
That redeems the works of hate
There's a dancing, there's a praising
There's a celebration raised
As a saint completes the race"

Bill Drake, director of worship for Operation Mobilisation and friend of INcontext Ministries, wrote the song "Wear the Crown" in response to the martyrdom of Bonnie Witherall who was serving in the Middle East.

It is a reminder for us today that while we feel anguish when hearing of the suffering and deaths of our brothers and sisters in Iraq, Syria and beyond, we can also celebrate that they are receiving heavenly crowns given as rewards for lives lived in faithfulness regardless of the cost.

'STRANGE BEDFELLOWS' AND THE IS INFLUENCE

The trail of blood that has followed the advance of the Islamic State has achieved the impossible:  it has provided a common adversary for Saudis and Iranians, Turks and Kurds, Russians and Americans, Sunnis and Shiites, and governments and terrorists.

On August 29 - before Obama's announcement of stepped-up action against IS that was followed by the first stages of the formation of a new 'coalition' of various countries opposed to the growing force in Iraq and Syria - the Wall Street Journal produced an infographic to map out some of the shifting diplomatic relationships brought about by the rise of IS.

7 SNARES IN RELATING TO THE PERSECUTED CHURCH

11Persecution11AUGUST 2014 - INcontext Ministries

The Body of Christ is so much more than a local church that meets on Sundays – it is a global body built up of all those who call Him Lord and Saviour. We are called to be one, and it is only together that we make sense and that we function effectively. This, however, is easier said than done. Even when we sincerely want to be there for our brothers and sisters elsewhere in the world, the manner in which we help and the kind of help we should offer requires careful reflection.  Relating to the Persecuted Church brings a host of challenges and risks that, if not addressed, will continue to undermine our good intentions and bring more harm than blessing.

This article addresses some of the areas where we may be challenged to reflect on current practises and to develop more ethical positions.

WHOSE SHARIA IS IT ANYWAY?

016-Perspectives-Sharia

MAY 2014 - INcontext Ministries

It has been a bad year for Islam in many ways. First, there was the kidnapping and reported sale of the Nigerian schoolgirls by Boko Haram, who openly claimed ‘religious acceptability’ for their acts. Then, the Sultan of Brunei's horrific new penal code came into effect, threatening to punish proven male-male sex with death. To top it off, the world was reminded of the cruelty of Islamic Sharia law when 27-year-old Meriam Ibrahim, pregnant with her second child, was found guilty of apostasy in Sudan and sentenced to flogging and ultimately to death by hanging.

Dr Kecia Ali, Associate Professor of Religion at Boston University where she teaches a range of classes related to Islam, responded with horror to the claims that all the above events not only happened in the name of Islam but were actually instructed in the name of Islam. In an article in Huffington Post, Dr Ali boldly asks the question: “Whose Sharia is it?”

WHY DO MUSLIMS DECIDE TO FOLLOW JESUS?

015-Perspectives-MuslimConversion

MAY 2014 - INcontext Ministries

Between 1991 and 2007, about 750 Muslims who have decided to follow Christ filled out an extensive questionnaire on what attracts them to Jesus. The respondents — from 30 countries and 50 ethnic groups — represent every major region of the Muslim world. The participants ranked the relative importance of different influences and whether they occurred before, at the time of, or after their decision to follow Christ. While the survey, prepared at Fuller Theological Seminary's School of Intercultural Studies, does not claim scientific precision, it provides a glimpse into some of the key means the Spirit of God is using to open Muslim hearts to the gospel.

So what attracts Muslims to follow Jesus?

MERIAM'S RULING - CONSISTENT WITH ISLAM OR NOT?

014-Perspectives-MeriamRuling

MAY 2014 - INcontext Ministries

On 17 May, experts in Islamic law (all from Western nations) widely condemned the Sudanese court death sentence given to a pregnant young Christian woman for apostasy. "The punishment has little to do with religion and serves as a political distraction," Mohamed Ghilan, an expert in Islamic jurisprudence, told Al Jazeera.  "This is a ploy by the Sudanese regime to appear as 'defenders of Islam' to mitigate their corruption."

“Not true!” says Elizabeth Kendall of Religious Liberty Monitoring in a special report to ASSIST News Service.  By sentencing Meriam to 100 lashes for adultery (after refusing to recognise her marriage to a Christian) and then condemning her to death for apostasy (after refusing to recognise her right to religious freedom), the Khartoum court not only exposed the barbarity of the regime; Khartoum's rulings have exposed the barbarity of Islam and Sharia. For Khartoum's rulings are totally consistent with Islam.

DECEPTION - THE ART OF ISLAMIC WARFARE

012-Perspectives-IslamicDeception

MAY 2014 - INcontext Ministries

It is a common defence of 'moderate' Muslims that atrocities done in the name of Islam is not 'real Islam'. Whenever an atrocity potentially dishonours Islam, non-Muslims are asked to agree that ‘this is not Islamic’ so that the honour of Islam can be kept pristine. The real issue is not what would be good or bad for Islam’s reputation… Islam is not the victim here.

In a culture where honour and shame determines the Islamic worldview, repentance is clearly not going to be an option. The only way for Muslims to defend their faith without losing face is through deceit. Deception within Islam has three pillars, and it is key for Western observers (Christian and non-Christian alike) to recognise these expressions of deceit in order to understand statements made in the media by so-called ‘moderate Muslims’.

WHY PEOPLE VOTE WHAT THEY VOTE

012-Perspectives-Voting

MAY 2014 - INcontext Ministries

As the final ballots of South Africa’s election were tallied, the governing African National Congress (ANC) celebrated another victory with their resounding 62 percent of the vote. These results came as no surprise, and even though many hoped for a stronger opposition, South Africans have much cause for celebration. Not for the individual results of the particular party they choose to support, but for the way in which the various opposing worldviews co-exist side by side, allowing for a peaceful political arena instead of the violent transitions that characterise many African nations. But why do people vote what they vote and why should non-ANC voters celebrate?

At INcontext, we are often asked the question of whether we think the youth in South Africa will try and imitate the actions of their counterparts in the Arab world. Will South Africa experience the equivalent of the “Arab Spring”?

In this regard, there are some valuable lessons to learn from Egypt, a nation that went through three revolutions in as many years.  There are five indicators that the church in South Africa should take seriously if there is any hope of influencing a nation that seems to be on a constant political tipping point.

THE MAIDAN MOVEMENT - TOWARDS FREEDOM OR NOT?

09-Perspective-MaidanMovement

MARCH 2014 - By Jeff Thompson

The battle in the streets of Kiev continues, but it is no longer violent. Last night on Independence Square, amidst the flowers for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, we listened as candidates were announced for Ukraine's interim government. Tens of thousands stood for hours in freezing cold to sing, to pray, and to cheer the announcement of these people chosen and approved by the Maidan* organization.  Seeds of hope have been planted again in the soil of Ukraine. It is not clear, however, if they will blossom into flowers of freedom.

In this field report by Jeff Thompson, founder/CEO of Mercy Projects, we get a personal insight into this highly unique situation which is both complex and fluid.

ISLAM'S SECOND CRISIS - THE TROUBLES TO COME

08-Perspective-IslamCrisisFEBRUARY 2014 - By Dr Mark Durie

The religion of Islam has long been regarded by Muslims as a prestigious brand, a symbol of stability in Islamic politics.  Thus politicians would be obliged to advertize their Islamic credentials.  If Islam itself loses credibility – which is already happening – a spiritual vacuum of considerable proportions will be created.  How this vacuum is filled will be difficult to predict, but what we can be sure of is that revivalism and the revivalists will not go quietly.

Fasten your seat-belts: the world will be in for quite a ride in the years to come, as Muslims – who constitute around a quarter of the world’s population – struggle to make theological sense of the trashing of their religion’s utopian vision.  It is one thing to blame the infidels for this – or the proxy tyrants which revivalists claim the West has foisted on the Muslim world – what is more threatening by far is the damage being done to Islam’s name by revivalist Muslims themselves.

In this in-depth article, Dr Mark Durie sheds light on the crisis within Islam that will lead to a long drawn-out period of political and social instability for Muslim societies.

OBAMA - MUSLIM JIHADIST OR CHRISTIAN PACIFIST?

07-Perspective-ObamaFEBRUARY 2013 - INcontext Ministries

Few people have been under the spiritual magnifying glass as much as US President Barack Obama, with anything remotely suggesting a possible link to the Antichrist or Islam now automatically being linked to him.

There is much need for us to be cautious before believing and acting on new information without investigation, but we should also be aware that our tendencies are to want to believe some kinds of information more than others, often relating to a negative judgement of others.

Regardless of what we know to be certain about Mr Obama, it still remains a Biblical commission to pray for our leaders. Do the rumours about his possible hidden allegiances leave us feeling hopeless and afraid for the future, or do we trust more in God than in human rulers? Do we set aside speculation about what Mr Obama is doing and consider what God is calling us to do?

Which questions do we need to be asking, in order to build the Kingdom of God?

THE VOICELESS VICTIMS OF ISLAMIC WARFARE

06-Perspective-IslamicWarfareJANUARY 2013 - INcontext Ministries

Six of the seven most deadly terrorist groups globally are affiliated with al-Qaeda, and most of their terror attacks are committed in Muslim-majority countries - a startling revelation if there were any doubts as to the motivation behind Islamic extremism.

Gone are the days when terrorist groups like the Irish Republican Army or Italy’s Red Brigade would try to keep casualties low by issuing warnings.  If you’re a terrorist group now and you want to get your message out, the more people you kill, the more ‘successful’ you’ll be.

As the ways of warfare change, the victims of warfare change accordingly.  In the historic mode of warfare, it was friend against enemy and winning a war meant defeating the enemy.  Not any more.  In Islamic warfare, the message is more important than people.  The guilty and the innocent will ultimately pay the price together for the ideology of the attacker.  If a fellow believer dies in the cross-fire, it is an “unfortunate consequence for the greater good”.  And since the majority of Islamic attacks take place in majority Muslim nations, the results are a given.

10 TIPPING POINTS FOR 2014

05-Perspective-2014TippingPoints

JANUARY 2014 - INcontext Ministries

Predicting global events is like target-shooting in the dark: you know you are likely to hit something but it will probably not be the target. Most news commentators, ranging from television media like Aljazeera to published media like The Economist, will admit that their predictions for 2013 generally missed the mark.

While Christians are called to be ‘watchmen on the wall’, predicting the future in these unpredictable times is foolish and presumptuous as well as a waste of time. What might be of greater value is learning as much as possible about issues that are likely to dominate world news in the coming year – issues that could potentially change the world as we know it today. These issues are what we describe as ‘tipping points’.

As Christians we need to be alert, awake and prepared to ask strategic questions that will assist the Church in responding to the needs of the world in a Biblical way. INcontext’s top ten tipping points for 2014 are as follows:

  • Tipping Point 1: Will the first of Iran's nuclear rockets lift off in 2014?
  • Tipping Point 2: Will the war in Syria continue to divide global powers and threaten to start WWIII?
  • Tipping Point 3: How will the Muslim Brotherhood respond to resistance, especially in the nation of Egypt?
  • Tipping Point 4: Will Russian president Vladimir Putin be the first leader to challenge Islamic terrorism?
  • Tipping Point 5: Will Pope Francis succeed in transforming the image of Christianity?
  • Tipping Point 6: How will the elections in India influence this religious hotspot?
  • Tipping Point 7: How will the US and NATO military withdrawal from Afghanistan affect that country's future?
  • Tipping Point 8: What is the impact of China’s expanding middle class?
  • Tipping Point 9: What will mid-term elections in November mean for US President Barack Obama?
  • Tipping Point 10: How will technology influence global missions?

MADIBA - THE INVISIBLE DIVIDE

04-Perspective-MadibaDECEMBER 2013 - INcontext Ministries

Like most things in life, every good intention has an invisible divide that, when overstepped, can turn the positive into a negative, the beauty into the ugly. Crossing the divide can turn love into obsession, grace into compromise, truth into judgement and honour into worship.

South Africans, and everybody across the globe, need to be aware of the invisible divides in our lives. May we understand the dangers of attributing divine qualities to human sinners and may we fear God alone and give Him glory as we honour those who serve Him faithfully.

VIDEO: A UKRAINIAN PEACEMAKER

NOVEMBER 2013 - From Kiev in Ukraine

Ukraine is at a cross-roads and at the point of a civil war. Thousands are taking to the streets to voice their anger. How will the Church respond?

In the midst of all the turmoil in Kiev, there are believers moving amongst the police and demonstrators, praying for peace and encouraging people not to use violence. This video clip shows an Orthodox priest praying and singing a song about God’s grace to the people, blessing them and praying that blood will not be shed. He touches each policeman with a gentle fatherly touch.

The director of the INcontext office in Ukraine asked for prayer and encouraged Christians from around the globe to join hands with the Ukrainian Church and the men and woman of God who are ministring on both sides of the revolution, bringing light into dark places.
